Diarrhea Diagnosis (Loose stools)

How diarrhea is diagnosed?

Your doctor will start by asking about your medical history and by reviewing if you take any medicine. He would do a a physical exam and would order tests to check for the cause of your diarrhea. This is how diarrhea diagnosis starts. The tests for Diarrhea Diagnosis may include:

 

Stool test

It may reveal presence of blood, fat, bacteria, or parasites. To collect a stool sample you would be provided with a container which would further evaluated in the lab.

 

Blood tests for Diarrhea Diagnosis

Your doctor may advice you a blood test to check for certain diseases or conditions that may cause diarrhea.

 

Hydrogen breath test

This test is done to check for lactose intolerance by measuring the amount of hydrogen present in your breath, which becomes abnormally high in lactose intolerance. For this, you will asked to drink a liquid containing lactose. This will followed by you breathing out into a balloon-type container which would measure the amount of hydrogen in breath.

Fasting tests

This test is done to check if a food intolerance or allergy is leading to diarrhea. For this your doctor may ask you to restrict yourself from foods containing lactose, carbohydrates, wheat, or other.

 

Endoscopy

Your doctor may do this test to have a direct look inside your intestines or to take sample of tissue for microscopic evaluation. For this he would pass a special tube called endoscope which is fitted with camera and tools into your intestine through your mouth or anus. So, above tests are required for Diarrhea diagnosis.

Endoscopic procedures may include

• Flexible sigmoidoscopy

• Colonoscopy

• Upper gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy
