This post is also available in: हिन्दी (Hindi)

How chronic kidney disease (CKD) is treated ?

The treatment depends on the cause, stage of kidney disease and other associated health issues. Some causes are reversible, including use of medications that affect kidney function, obstruction in the urinary tract, or decreased blood flow to the kidneys. Treatment of reversible causes may prevent CKD from further worsening.

Research has shown that management of CKD is best done with involvement of a nephrologist, who specializes in kidney diseases.

Following a proper treatment plan carefully, could help the kidneys to prevent from further damage and to allow them to work at their best for as long as possible.

The sooner the kidney disease is detected the better it is to protect them from further damage and to prevent other associated diseases such as heart disease, anaemia, stroke etc.

Following treatment plans are followed for patient of CKD:

Control high blood pressure:

The most important step to avoid progression of CKD is to control blood pressure within desired limits. For many people, the target blood pressure is less than 130/80 mm Hg. There can be different targets for different people, based on associated factors or diseases, which is decided by the specialist doctor.

Following steps can be taken to meet the target blood pressure goals:

• Taking medicines to control BP as prescribed. In people with kidney disease, angiotensin- converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors or angiotensin-receptor blockers (ARBs) are given which have shown to protect kidneys from damage.

• Eating healthy diet and having low-sodium meals.

• Quit smoking

• Being physically active and doing exercise. If overweight losing weight can also help.

• Getting enough sleep
