How cervical cancer is treated?

• Surgical Treatment is offered to the patient in stage 1 and early cases of stage 2 cancers. Various types of hysterectomies are done which gives a good prognosis and near-normal post-surgery life. Nowadays the option of minimally invasive surgery (endoscopic surgery) and Robotic surgery is also available at specialized centers which gives excellent results and minimum post-surgery morbidity.

• Radiotherapy is usually offered to patients with advanced-stage 2 and higher. It is more effective than chemotherapy in cervical cancers, but depending on microscopic type of cancer.

• Chemotherapy is also offered in stage 3 or more where surgery is not possible because of spread of cancer. It is used with radiotherapy or sometime when patient shows no good response with radiotherapy. Also depends upon the microscopic type of cancer. Some responds well to radiotherapy and some to chemotherapy.

• Combined therapy where radiotherapy and chemotherapy are also given before and or after surgery to get better results. Usually offered to later cases of stage 2 or early cases of stage 3. It helps to get better outcome of surgery.
